The Mercy College School of Education is offering year-round certified anti-bullying workshops for training in line with the Dignity for All Students Act (DASA). Workshops are offered on every Mercy campus to school professionals and all interested individuals including teachers, students and officials in and beyond the community — all are welcome.
Offered on every campus, the workshops consist of six-hour classes divided into three-hour segments, and are certified by the New York State Education Department (NYSED). The instructors, experienced anti-bullying educators, host interactive workshops on topics including personal bias, identifying bullying behavior, how to intervene in bullying, cyberbullying situations and more. Workshops fulfill NYSED and School District requirements “for school professionals and for anyone seeking a teaching certificate, whether it is initial, professional, or adding on a new certification.”
Participants may take both parts consecutively if offered on the same day and two separate parts to accommodate their schedule, though certification requires a full six hours.
“Bullying is a major issue,” said Dr. Ilene Rothschild, associate professor in the Mercy School of Education. “We do everything we can on a college level to prepare the future teachers or the neighborhood teachers to be aware of it, to be involved in it, to understand their responsibilities as a teacher, now or in the future.”
